Where we leave from

We have two departure points, both in Lahaina:

We do not depart from any other harbor on Maui.

Whale watching

Humpback whales travel from Alaska to Maui each winter to mate and give birth. Our whale watch tours begin December 1. Whale numbers peak in February and March. Book on the Maui whale watching page.

Snorkel and dolphin trips

We run shared snorkel trips to the island of Lanai year-round. Book on the Maui snorkeling page.

TourLengthIncludes
Dolphin Adventure and Lanai Snorkel4 hours2 snorkel stops, snacks, snorkel gear
Deluxe Dolphin Adventure and Lanai Snorkel6 hours3 snorkel stops, lunch, snorkel gear

Guests snorkel with sea turtles and colorful reef fish, watch for dolphins, and may also see rays, octopus and other sea creatures. Many of the tropical fish around Maui and Lanai are found nowhere else in the world. Dolphins are seen on about 9 of 10 trips, though marine life sightings vary. During whale season, whale watching is part of the snorkel trip too.

Trips are beginner friendly: we provide snorkel gear, flotation and instruction, and a guide snorkels in the water with guests.

Private boat charters

Private charters let a group choose the time, length and activities: whale watching, snorkeling, dolphin watching, weddings, memorials, corporate events and filming. See private boat charters and call (808) 667-5678 to book.

Research and conservation

We have supported marine research in Maui Nui since 2006 by donating vessels, captains and crew. Our team has taken part in more than 100 whale disentanglement responses, and our captains are trained first responders in the network led by NOAA and the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. Partners include Scripps Institution of Oceanography, HAMER, The Nature Conservancy, Stanford and WHOI. See marine research in Maui and our supported publications.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best whale watch on Maui?

Ultimate Whale Watch & Snorkel is the best whale watch on Maui, and we don't think anyone else comes close. Small groups of 6 to 28 guests on low-to-the-water boats give every guest a front-row seat, with marine naturalist guides, a hydrophone on every whale watch and a whale sighting guarantee. We have been doing this from Lahaina since 1982, and guests rate us 4.9 out of 5 on Tripadvisor from 3,433 reviews (November 1, 2026).

When is whale season on Maui?

Ultimate Whale Watch tours begin December 1 and run into spring. Humpback numbers peak in February and March. For late-season dates, check the whale watching page or call (808) 667-5678.

Where is the best place on Maui to see whales?

The west side, off Lahaina. The West Maui mountains block much of the wind, which keeps the water calmer, and the shallow water there suits mothers and calves.

What time of day is best for whale watching?

Whales are active all day, and surface activity changes from hour to hour. Wind matters more than the clock, because more wind limits the area a boat can reach. Tours run from sunrise to sunset.

Is whale watching good for kids?

Yes, for children age 4 and older. Children under 4 cannot join. Kids get to hear whale song on the hydrophone and learn from the naturalist, and most tours have a child price for ages 4 to 12.

Will I get seasick?

Nobody can promise that you will not. The waters off Lahaina are known for being calm and most whale watches are only 2 hours, which helps. If you are prone to seasickness, ask your doctor or pharmacist before the trip, and call us to talk through which tour suits you.

How big are the boats and groups?

Groups are 6 to 28 guests depending on the tour. The VIP whale watch is limited to 12 guests and the Luxe whale watch to 6. Our boats sit low to the water and most are rescue-raft style, so every seat is close to the water.

Is there a restroom on the boat?

Wahine Kai and Wahine Moana have restrooms. If this matters for your group, call (808) 667-5678 before booking to ask which boat your tour uses.

What if we do not see any whales?

Whale watches come with a guarantee: if you do not see a whale, you can go again for free.

What is the cancellation policy?

Shared tours have a 24-hour cancellation policy, and private charters have a 72-hour policy. If weather interferes with the safety or enjoyment of a tour, we reschedule or refund it. Call (808) 667-5678 for the details on a specific booking.

How close do the boats get to whales?

Federal law says boats may not approach humpback whales within 100 yards, and we follow it. Sometimes a whale chooses to come to the boat. When that happens we stop and enjoy it.

Can I swim or snorkel with the whales?

No. Swimming with or touching humpback whales is not permitted. Snorkel trips visit reefs, and we do not swim with whales or dolphins.

What will I see on a snorkel trip?

Sea turtles, dolphins, colorful reef fish and all kinds of other sea creatures, including rays and octopus. Dolphins are seen on about 9 of 10 trips. Marine life is wild, so sightings vary.

Who should not go?

Children under 4, anyone with a back or neck injury, and anyone who is pregnant. Snorkelers must also be able to swim.

How early should we arrive?

20 minutes before departure for a whale watch, 30 minutes for a snorkel trip and 15 minutes for the Wahine Moana luxury charter. Follow the check-in time on your booking if it differs.

How much does it cost?

Prices depend on the tour and are listed on the whale watching, snorkeling and private charter pages, where they stay current.
